virtualbox is a normal VM, like Bochs, Vmware, or Qemu
Vista, actually runs INSIDE the VM, but using something like remote desktop connection (rdesktop for ex) allows for that effect.
Practically, you WILL achieve that same screen shot if you used rdesktop from your linux laptop to your vista pc. It's just in that case Vista happens to be inside a VM.
This effect can be achieved with any VM, but virtualbox has it built-in (of course you have to install it's software on the guest OS).

What I meant with 3d acceleration is that VMs don't quite support 3d acceleration yet (thus no decent 3d games). Vmware and parallels VM support a not-so-stable implementation of DX 8.1. not even DX 9 yet :(
(although there exists FULL openGL support using VMGL - which depends on VNC viewer - the same concept as rdesktop; "remote desktop connection")

Anyways, once proper 3D accel in VMs are out there, while in linux just open the "start" menu and select your game - and enjoy on LINUX all programs that are on windows w/out needing WINE :)
